I have written about the relationship between art and science before. With the 2013 Scientific Images contest opening on the horizon, the subject has been on my mind lately.
I come across the intersection of these two worlds on a daily basis. Mostly through several blogs I follow on social media. These blogs do a fantastic job of curating the work of artists, photographers and designers, and often showcase creations with a scientific bent. Here are three of my favorite sites. I hope they inspire, engage and delight you, as well!
Colossal is edited by Christopher Jobson, a Chicago resident with a highly artistic eye. His blog features the “visual ingenuity” of artists across the globe, making Colossal a one-stop shop for art enthusiasts. And, many of Jobson’s finds are inspired by science and nature. From root sculptures to macro shots of shimmering spiders to the human anatomy constructed from paper or felt, artists featured on Colossal draw inspiration from the world around them. My Modern Met is where “where art enthusiasts and trendspotters connect over creative ideas.” The collaborative creation of several dedicated bloggers, the site also invites readers to submit links to work they find interesting or inspiring. Peruse the posts for science-inspired creations, like paper sculptures that mimic patterns found in nature, indoor clouds and breathtaking shots of the night sky. Though not solely devoted to art, Twisted Sifter definitely has design in mind. Curated by Ben Matthew Wong, the site aims “to sift, sort and summarize the best of the visual Web to keep you up-to-date and in the know.” Quite the task! But, Wong definitely delivers. If you’d like a quick summary of the week’s Web happenings, check out The Shirk Report. I usually head straight for the Sci/Tech and Nature/Space sections.
